Drug addiction refers to the dependence of the body on a particular substance. It is characterised by severe craving for the drug at the regular intervals. There are many drugs that cause addiction. These are the traditional narcotics such as cocaine, morphine, heroin, marijuana and hashish. Moreover, the abuse of the psychoactive drugs also comes under this category. These drugs include the antidepressants, mood stabilisers and anti-anxiety agents. The uses and the abuse of these drugs can subject the person to lifelong dependence. It impairs the central nervous system. These drugs slow down the conduction of the nerve impulse; thus, the person becomes partially unconscious and forgets about all his sufferings. Some people adopt it to abstain from a certain feeling or thought, and others do so for the sake of entertainment.

Drug addiction drags the person away from his life. Each time you take drugs, you subtract some moments from your life. It is equivalent to slow poisoning. Whenever the addict thinks of getting back to the life, it is a very positive sign. With the advancement in the medical treatments and the therapies, it is no more an impossible act. If an addict is willing, he can certainly get rid of drug addiction.

Curing drug addiction starts form the will power of the addict. The addict can find many people around him who are sincere about his abstinence from drugs. With the support of a friend, you can stop taking drugs. But, research has shown that the long term use of the drugs might have produced such changes in the brain that it becomes difficult to achieve the long term abstinence, without any treatment.

There are many treatments, therapies and the rehabilitation centres for the cure of drug addiction. This process occurs in many settings, forms and for different lengths of time. The best treatment combines all the essential procedures such as drug treatment and therapies, both physical and psychological, to attain a positive outcome.

The therapies include the behavioural therapies, contingency management, medication, hypnotherapies, physical exercises and the combination of all. These treatments depend upon the degree of addiction and the needs of the patient. The procedure becomes more complicated when the addicted person suffers from other health, legal, familial and social problems.

The rehabilitation centres have professional physicians who understand the severity of the problem and the way of treatment. They make use of the aiding drugs, which include bupronorphine, naltrexone and methadone. These drugs are used for the treatment of the patient addicted to the certain drugs. These drugs are the substitute for the narcotics during the periods of the severe cravings. Quitting these drugs altogether will be hazardous for the body, so some dose is given, which overcomes the cravings as well as produce positive effect on the nervous system.

These are accompanied with the psychological therapies. They are employed to boost up the spirit and motivate them to fully cooperate in the drug treatment. These treatments help to overcome the negative attitude that often prevails in the addicts.

The goal of the treatment is to pull the person back to the productive functioning in the family, workplace and the community. The success of the treatment lies in the complete lifelong abstinence of the drug. So, by the support of the family, friends and proper treatment, drug addiction can be cured.

He who conquers himself has won a greater victory than he who conquers a city.- Proverb

Addiction is a disease that is often associated with a grueling road to recovery. Those who have found themselves dependent on a substance or a self-defeating behavior often experience cycles of attempts to heal themselves and painful relapse. In fact, the road to recovery may in itself be traumatic: full of frustration and self-loathing.

“I tried. God knows I tried. But I am stuck in this rut. I cannot do anything.”

The public commonly perceives addicts as so deep into the disease that they do not have periods desiring sobriety. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Addicts, like you and me, have moments of clarity and self-awareness. They have periods when they come face-to-face with the consequences of their illness. They feel guilt, remorse, frustration and even fear. Deep down, most of them do not intentionally set out to inflict emotional pain on their loved ones. They make plans to change. They make promises to be better. The problem is that they cannot keep them.

But recovery is NOT impossible.

A good number of people have found help and support and they have moved on to live full and tempered lives. Many have found healing from addictive behaviors as an entry point to healing other things in their lives: healing their personal life, relational life and work life. But what is clear is that recovery takes WORK. You cannot say goodbye to addiction overnight. It may even require from you months, even years of consistent personal processing. But it is not impossible.

And it will be well worth it.

Washington, Jan 22 (ANI): It could take around five years for Tiger Woods to cure his sex addiction.

The defamed golfer is being treated at The Pine Grove Behavioural Health and Addiction Services clinic in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Woods entered the sex rehab following the exposure of his sexcapades.

Famed addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky, whose VH1 reality series 'Celebrity Rehab' follows him as he helps reform stars seeking treatment for sexual and substance abuse, said that the golfer has a long road ahead of him before he can achieve recovery.

“The whole treatment takes about 3-5 years, it is a 12-step among other things and usually involves very delicate therapy and trauma therapy as well as a lot of education,” Fox News quoted Pinsky as saying.

Pinsky is not involved in Woods' treatment. (ANI)

How to Remove the Psychological Addiction to Smoking – and Start to ENJOY Giving
by: john Ryan

Consider this:

Already since 1972, over 60million people in the USA alone have successfully quit smoking!

At one stage over 60% of the adult population was addicted to this drug. Today it is 28% and dropping……..

Now, isn’t this a fair thought……

If all these people can do it (60 MILLION OF THEM!) – and they include EVERY TYPE of person imaginable – surely that is PROOF that IT IS POSSIBLE to successfully give up smoking.

Here’s another Fact……

We now know from the latest scientific research, that although nicotine is one of the world’s fastest acting drugs — the actual PHYSICAL withdrawal pangs when you give up ARE SO MILD, YOU WILL HARDLY NOTICE THEM WHEN YOU STOP.

YES, you have read that sentence right!

I know you will want to argue with me on this point, but, first, let me first make the following points…….

The Desire to Smoke

Yes, when you stop smoking you will feel the desire AGAIN and AGAIN to smoke.

We all know that feeling — ‘I must have a cigarette’. But that desire in itself is not bad or painful.

It is just a feeling, a sensation we feel in our body.

However……..this is where, for most of us our problems start…..

If we start to fear that ‘craving’ or try to use ‘Willpower’ to REPRESS it or FORCE it go away, — “I wish this feeling would go away” we WILL create pain and tension.

This is what as smokers we have all done in the past.

That ‘feeling’ of wanting to smoke then becomes painful, annoying and terribly irritating.

Now this is the hard part to realize…….

The pain, the horror does not come from the desire to smoke, but from HOW we deal with this desire, moment-by-moment WHEN we stop.

Can I emphasize this:

You do not have to experience ANY pain or agony when you stop. Yes, when you stop you WILL experience a ………..

Temporary feeling of loss

A feeling that you are being deprived of something

A feeling of emptiness

A feeling that you will never be able to enjoy yourself again.

A feeling that you must have a cigarette

These feelings, although very real in themselves are not inherently bad or painful. What is important is how you deal with these feelings when you stop.

The key part of giving up smoking naturally is learning how to deal with these cravings when you stop.

Conflict

Right now, you don’t want to give up smoking because you are TERRIFIED of how you will FEEL when you can’t smoke.

Let’s be honest.

You smoke now because you enjoy it.

Or — to be more accurate: You smoke now because you have conditioned yourself to enjoy it.

It is important that we are honest with ourselves here.

In fact, even the ‘THOUGHT’, the mere ‘thought’ of not been able to smoke probably fills you with utter dread now.

But there is another undeniable fact: This ‘pleasure’ is killing you.

Again we must be brutally honest here. Everyday, you are systemically destroying your health.

This is the conflict all smokers face.

On the one hand, smoking is killing you and you desperately want to stop…..

..And yet on the other hand, you don’t really want to stop because you believe you really enjoy it.

Yet, one other truth cannot be denied and this applies to every smoker……..

We are terrified of how we will F-E-E-L when we can’t smoke. We are convinced it will be unbearable and impossible.

FEAR

Right now, the ONLY thing — yes, THE ONLY THING stopping you from giving up smoking is this fear of how YOU WILL FEEL WHEN YOU STOP.

And yet this very fear is the actual key to giving up smoking naturally.

Giving up smoking is really all about learning HOW to deal with the cravings and feelings you WILL get when you stop.

When you learn how to do that – you will realize that there is nothing to fear when you give up.

What is there to fear ?

When you get the craving to smoke, which you will, again and again – - you will now take the OPPORTUNITY to ‘change’ or ‘transform’ that craving so that it is actually enjoyable or at least tolerable to experience.

Imagine……

You have decided to give up smoking. It’s dinnertime.

You have finished a day’s work…..

You finish your meal and ….. subconsciously, you reach for a cigarette.

But then, of course you remember you no longer smoke.

Bang! At that moment, certain gut feelings will arise.

Feelings of regret……..a feeling that you are missing out on something important and then maybe….. terrible feelings of emptiness…..

We all know how it feels.

But the real question is: How will you deal with this feeling — this craving to smoke?

Will you just suffer it, try to repress it and hope that it will go away?

That is one option. The old willpower method.

Or will you give in to the feeling — and start to smoke again (promising to start again tomorrow)?

Or will you – - for the first time ever: – - follow our instructions and actually ALLOW yourself to transform the feeling/craving so that it is actually enjoyable or at least pleasant or tolerable enough to experience.

You see, when you can do that, you will no longer be AFRAID of these cravings when you stop smoking.

In fact, you will start to WELCOME them because they will give you another opportunity to RESPOND and DEAL with them in this NEW WAY.

This process is the essence of giving up smoking naturally and finding it a pleasant and life-affirming experience.

Weight-loss?

Are you now beginning to see how these principles can also apply to losing weight.

You see a beautiful cake. You want to eat it….when BANG! — You remember you are on a diet.

Now watch HOW YOU feel when this happens?

Couldn’t we describe it as ….

‘Feelings of regret……..a feeling that you are missing out on something important and then maybe….. terrible feelings of emptiness…..

Isn’t it essentially the same feeling as not being able to smoke?

However, the real question is the same with smoking: How will you DEAL with this feeling — this craving to eat?

Will you GIVE IN to it — and eat the cake or will you try and FORCE yourself not to eat it- and be miserable?

Why not consider our alternative?

Accept this feeling, this desire to eat. But, instead of giving in to it, learn how to deal and respond to it in a NEW way so that you don’t MIND experiencing it?

Transform the craving so that it is actually enjoyable or very pleasant to experience.

The Joy of Giving up Smoking?

Remember, when you stop – yes, you WILL feel something but there will be no physical agony, only a temporary feeling that you are MISSING OUT on something.

A feeling that you are being deprived of something SPECIAL — but these feelings will ONLY be temporary.

However, to quit smoking successfully and to start to enjoy doing it we must go deeper than these temporary cravings.

We must realize that :

You find it difficult or impossible to stop smoking now because……… you BELIEVE ABSOLUTELY that you NEED to smoke and even deeper, you BELIEVE that if you give up smoking now, your life will never be as ENJOYABLE again.

In one sentence: You believe your life will be intolerable.

It is these beliefs that makes giving up smoking difficult NOT Nicotine addiction.

Right now, you are not only physically addicted to smoking but you are psychologically dependent or addicted to smoking.

If your addiction were purely physical wouldn’t all these nicotine patches have a 100% success record ?

Yet, we all know that even if we use a nicotine substitute, we will still continue to feel a terrible desire to smoke.

Again and again, we’ll feel we must have a cigarette. At times, it will even get to the stage where we just don’t care – even the most dire health warnings will have no affect on us – we just WANT to smoke.

Where does this desire come from ?

It comes from our conditioning, our beliefs about smoking.

This moment, we believe that smoking is an essential pleasure.

In fact, most of us have a terrible resistance to EVEN thinking about giving up smoking.

Why ?

Because we believe that in order to do anything about our addiction, i.e. give up smoking — we would have to end our pleasure and ending pleasure is something we have NO DESIRE to do.

YOUR REAL JOB

Your real job in giving up smoking lies in REALLY UNDERSTANDING that you don’t NEED to smoke.

You remove the psychological addiction to smoking.

You will never be truly free until you realize that smoking is not a real pleasure and that when you stop, you WILL NOT BE depriving ourselves of a real pleasure……. ……and then you will not only be able to give up smoking for good but you will enjoy doing it!

So Who exactly is an “Addict/Alcoholic” anyway?
by: Carl-Peter Lehmann

It’s a common question many people have. Am I really an addict? (… or How do I know if someone I care about is addicted?) What’s the difference between an alcoholic and drug addict? Is there a difference between a cocaine … heroin … or even a marijuana addict?

A lot of people today drink alcohol and a fair number use drugs. (Does that make them all alcoholics or drug addicts?) Of course not!

So how do you know for sure? …

The difference between someone who is addicted and someone who simply uses or abuses a particular substance is the “compulsion to use” (whatever the substance may be)

And what do I mean by “compulsion to use”? …

Simply that most people who for example drink, know when to stop or have the power to say, “enough is enough.” (not always, but most of the time)

Whereas the alcoholic or drug addict can’t say no or simply walk away like most people can. As an addict or alcoholic – once you start it becomes almost impossible to stop – to control your using because the compulsion to use or drink is just too strong.

When you become addicted you almost lose the power to choose. That might sound flimsy or wish-washy, but it’s not and I’ll tell you why in the next part of this course …

The other big question … is what’s the difference between being an alcoholic or drug addict, whatever your drug of choice may be?

If you look at it carefully … not a lot actually. Yes your drug (or drink) of choice may be different … create a different form of high (or feeling), but the end result is still pretty much the same, i.e. “addiction,” which leads to “destruction” – or call it what you will – (mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally) … and which can ultimately lead to the heaviest price that anyone can pay … death.

So as a heroin addict that process might happen fairly quickly, whereas for the alcoholic it may happen far more gradually over a number of years, yet the consequences (no matter what the substance), of addiction will be very similar.

That’s why it’s a good idea to start thinking in terms of “addict” rather than “alcoholic,” “drug addict,” “junkie” or whatever you’ve been thinking of or using to describe such a person up to now. (Addicts like to think of themselves as “special and different” and that their problems are unique – but in actual fact they are no different to any other “addict”). I know I’ve been there …

Why do you think most major rehab facilities treat alcoholism, drug addiction and even things like gambling and sex addiction pretty much the same way?

Addicts even refer to alcohol as a drug because they know that even though for most people it can be enjoyed in moderation – for them it can’t – and that’s why it’s viewed in the same light (even though it may legal and regarded as socially acceptable.)

This article is from Part 1 of a Free 10 Part e-Course that discusses:

Is Drug Addiction A Crime?

This article is about people who are addicted to illegal drugs, not people who become addicted to prescription drugs that were originaly prescribed by a licensed physician for a legitimate reason.

According to most defense attorneys, politicians, religious leaders, Hollywood celebrities and Democrats as well as many prosecutors and judges and as well as a large part of the American public who have been brainwashed by the “politically correct arbitrators”, drug addicts are victims.

As far as I am concerned, that is a bunch of hogwash. Drug addicts are most definitely criminals. Not only are they criminals, they are as bad as, and should be punished in the same manner as, drug peddlers.

I don’t feel sorry for drug users and addicts. A drug user, with very few exceptions (ie: Someone with an IQ of under sixty), knew the very first time he or she took illegal drugs that he or she was breaking the law. Therefore, the drug user, at that point, became a criminal. The drug user was not only breaking the law, he or she was also aiding and abetting the criminal that gave or sold the user the drugs. The user was providing, or would in the future provide, money or services to the peddler that would enable the peddler to stay in business and to break more laws. If there were no users, there would be no peddlers and if there were no peddlers there would be no drug lords. There would be no drug lords who could use their money to commit murder, nor cause murder to be commited. There would be no drug lords to bribe government officials, no drug lords to pay people to grow and cultivate plants to be turned into drugs. In other words if there were no drug users there would be no drug trafficking.

People have said to me, “I only smoke marijuana, and smoking marijuana should not be against the law because it is no worse than drinking acohol. Additionally, if it is a crime it is a victimless crime.”. I tell them that they are wrong. In the first place drinking alcohol is legal for people over the age of twenty one (Whether or not drinking alcohol should be legal is a subject for another article.). In the second place, money used to buy marijuana goes to criminals and is in many instances used to commit more crimes. In the third place, some people resort to crime in order to support their habit. In
1000
the fourth place, many people while smoking marijauna, become idiots, and while being forced to talk to or deal with those people may not be considered a crime… it should be.

Many people state that the laws against using certain drugs are bad laws, therefore it is okay to break those laws. Well, I have news for them, if they use those drugs, they are breaking those laws (good or bad) and they are still criminals and they still deserve to be punished. Everyone has their own ideas as to which laws are good and which laws are bad. If everyone only adhered to the laws that they approved of then we would have anarchy.

If you don’t like the current drug laws, work to have them changed. In the meantime every time you use illegal drugs you are helping someone either, a criminal or a terrorist, get into a position where they can commit more crimes, including possibly taking the lives of innocent people. This means that you could, indirectly, be killing innocent people in order to have your fun.

As far as I am concerned, anyone who would put people’s lives in jeopardy in order to “enjoy” the use of illegal drugs, should be sent to prison for a long time. The idea that we should be helping and rehabilitating these ‘poor’, ‘abused’ drug addicts is baloney. People that are addicted to illegal drugs started out as criminals and are still criminals. They knew that they were breaking the law and, unless they were really stupid, they knew there was a chance that they could become addicted. They might have thought that they were too smart or too strong to become addicted, but they still knew that there was, no matter how small, a chance that it could happen.

Remember, if there were no drug users there would be no drug trafficking.

OTTAWA (CBC) – A settlement has been ironed out between the Quebec government and Loto-Québec in a legal battle over the cost of treating people with gambling addiction, according to a published report.

While a lottery corporation spokesperson said Thursday details of the settlement will be made public on Jan. 16, La Presse newspaper reported that the provincial government has agreed to reimburse treatment costs for problem gamblers between 1994 and 2002.

The agreement reportedly settles the class action lawsuit brought against Loto-Québec in 2001.

The case went to court in 2008 and was supposed to wrap up in the next couple of months.

The lawsuit sought about $1 billion in damages.

The settlement will reportedly cost the provincial government around $50 million.

A hearing on the settlement is set for March 8 in Quebec City. Plantiffs who disagree with the deal will present their opposition to a judge, who will rule on the agreement.
