Could half of Christian men have a problem with porn, as so many of the statistics say?

Porn is reported to be a 12 billion dollar industry in the U.S… 50 percent of men viewed pornography within one week of attending a Promise Keepers stadium event… 54 percent of pastors said they viewed porn within the past year in a Pastors.com survey… in a 2003 Focus on the Family poll 47% of respondents said porn is a problem in their home…

12 billion… 50 percent… half. My eyes glaze over at numbers like this. Are we supposed to buy into the idea that half of the men in the church are porn addicts? Maybe it’s just more sensational rhetoric meant to rouse us for battle against the culture.

Certainly half the men in my church couldn’t have a problem with porn. Most the men in our body of 600 are in their late 30s to early 40s, married, and the father of little ones. They have successful careers making good money and are involved in ministry. I couldn’t picture so many of these men I sit next to every Sunday leering at porn.

Wanting to prove the numbers wrong, in the spring of 2004 I approached the leadership of our church and asked if we could survey the men on the topic of pornography. Our numbers will be different; “half” can’t be true here, I thought. Of those who responded, 25 percent had looked at porn within the past 30 days, 44 percent within six months, and 61 percent within the year. The real statistic is probably higher; I heard later that a number of men didn’t fill out the survey “because they were afraid of how it would be used.”

Ted Roberts, a pastor who’s ministered to many caught in the bondage of sexual addiction recounts the following story in his book Pure Desire:

“I was speaking in the Bible Belt not too long ago. When I asked the gracious pastor what he wanted me to share about during the weekend service, he said, “just tell them about the great work God is doing at your church.”

I said, “I would love to do that, but I will end up talking about real life – about the bondage, addiction and trauma that so many people are struggling with today. And I will challenge them to open up these areas of their lives to God so He can heal them and set them free.”

The expression on his face changed a bit and he commented, “Well, I don’t think we have a lot of folks dealing with the depth of issues that you’re talking about. This isn’t just the Bible belt part of the country. We call it the buckle of the Bible Belt.”

But that pastor gave me the green light, so I didn’t pull any punches. Then, at the end of the service, I gave an altar call for people struggling with sexual issues. No one moved at first. Then the dam broke, and they lined up three to four deep at the altarŔ

A few years ago a friend of mine told me of a small men’s retreat he attended in Idaho. When the men were challenged in the area of sexual purity, the biggest, toughest looking guy in the room stood up and said “I’m struggling with porn and I know some of you guys are too, so stand up if you are and let’s deal with this!”

Half of the forty men in the room came to their feet.

Accepting the fact that at least half of Christian men (pastors, music ministers, missionaries and those in children’s ministry included) have an issue with porn is a big pill to swallow. We want to see the church in a positive light; we don’t want to picture little Jenny’s daddy masturbating to pictures of naked women (or men, if his bent is with homosexuality). We don’t want the problem to be this big, because the church is in serious trouble if it is.

The following excerpt is from an open letter Chuck Swindoll posted on his Insight for Living Website not long ago:

“The most recent studies available suggest that one out of every two people-that’s 50 percent of the people sitting in our pews, are looking at and/or could be addicted to Internet pornography… Truth be told, that statistic could be even higher…

Stop and imagine the ugly but very real possibility of some of your own elders and deacons leaving your meetings and going home to surf porn. Think about youth leaders viewing it one minute, and leading a small group with your kids thirty minutes later. It’s ruining marriages, destroying relationships, harming youth, and hurting the body of Christ. You hardly need to be reminded that fallen pastors and priests did not “suddenly” fall. More often than not, pornography played a role in their downward spiral.

My friend, it’s time to do something about it. In fact, we need to start today. Making a difference requires action… Our churches are in trouble. This is no time to simply wait and pray.”

In my ministry to those who struggle with porn and sex addiction I see many marriages and families on the brink of divorce. Most guys wait until their dirty little secret spins out of control into a big traumatic mess before they do something about it. What starts out as “just me and pictures” can destroy a family. Sadly, there are some marriages that don’t make it.

The church needs to expose this snake and cut off its head before more lives are ruined. In the next two days we’ll provide you with effective strategies for doing just that.

Here we will come to know who are the most responsible person to make your child an addicted person & failure.

In general we see kids who are addicted of tobacco , drinking, smoking, etc. addictions are the symbols of unhealthy personality.

Kids adopts addictions because of a] Stress, B] Depression. C] repression. (form anything) When a kid feels one of these or similar of these he wants to come out form the situations. In many countries – drinking and smoking are the accepted norms of getting happiness.

At first when a kid smoke or drink – he does not get any pleasant experience / relief / happiness. But peoples around him makes him feel so. Over a period of a time he develops & adopts the habit / addiction.

In a survey it is found that kids gives similar expressions on the question “why you smoke / drink etc.?” or ”what and how you feel after / while drinking or smoking ? “

These expressions are a] I get mental peace, b] I feel more confident and aggressive, c] it is good for my tummy & helps in latrine, d] It is full of pride & sign of growing man e] it removes the loneliness, anger, depression. But this is all away form fact & just a self-deceit.

In the parental aspect when the parents came to know about their kid’s addictions / bad habits ; the (99.9% normal reaction ) parents says “ (1) He has bad Company”, “(2)He has bad friends” etc. But in reality it fiction and fact is different. Yes, Fact is different.

Form the beginning / since your child born he has only company and that is you, The parent. He / she got your company for very first day.

Not getting the good company form parents is the main reason to raise new problems in the life of a kid.

Confidence and every thing which requires in social life : he gets it form the home (your company).

But what Exactly happens by which they get mentally imbalanced & cause addiction / bad habits ? well, the reasons are.

being our self (parents) indiscipline & teaching / imposing discipline to kids
Pressure to follow the rules, and discouragement.
Our self (parents) addicted and not giving sufficient time to the kids
Not allowing kids to express emotions & needs. Not understanding the kids
Not giving love & affection at the expectation level of kids
Improper / Imbalanced mutual understanding and difference of opinion among parents.
Economical problems in family and divorce.

These are the main reasons by which kids gets influenced and affected.

By the nature of law everybody wants to forget the bad / troubling events in life and to get relief kids do addiction just to get so called happiness and he develops inferiority complex that he has chance to get happy form addiction(s) (which he never gets).

To do addictions he requires money and to earn / grab that money he creates more problems.

Basically in these kids – confidence level gets low and low, reduces the success rate, develops the negative thoughts and bad results are keep on growing.

Any one can predict the future of such kids( and you also know the beginning point).

Getting escape form addiction is very hard thing, easy thing is to prevent them form addiction before they starts.

We bring them on the earth so its only parents responsibility & duty to make child successful by providing right mind & body needs.

Just like a kite, a thread helps kite to reach top most place in the sky ; Similarly we are (thread) in parent-child relationship. What if you loose / cut the threadŅ ?

We have no rights to raise question and to say my son / daughter has bad company.

Gambling Addiction: How To Get Rid Of It

There are many vices lurking in the society today. One of which is gambling.

What’s even worse is the fact that people who are so hooked up with gambling have the tendency to get addicted to it.

Addiction is a serious social issue that society is still trying to muster. With gambling addiction, gamblers just don’t lose money but life and family as well. That is why it is extremely important to solve the problem.

In reality, there are available measures and methods so as to treat gambling addiction. Some of which are:

1. Through medications.

Usually, gambling addicts are treated through medications in the form of anti-depressants or what medical experts call as Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or the SSRR. This medication has been proven to treat pathological gamblers or those who feel the blow whenever they win.

2. Through psychological treatments.

Most psychologists contend that the problem of gambling addiction is often associated with a problem on their cognitive behavior. Hence, it would be better to let the gambling addicts undergo cognitive behavior therapy.

In this process, the gambling addicts are taught how to get rid of the negative ideas and replace them with positive ones.

3. Through group therapy.

Group discussions are also effective in treating gambling addiction. Through this method, gamblers will get to interact and discuss their own personal problems that led them to gambling.

One great advantage of this therapy is that gamblers get to listen to other gamblers stories. They will be able to understand some angles that may sound just like their very own situations but were unable to identify them because of the feeling of rejection or shame.

Gambling addiction must be stopped at once. It has already dominated the society and even perpetuated the problem among college students. In 2004, the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania has reported that 11.4% of their male students are fond of betting cards at least once a week. This was deemed alarming because they had only 6.2% on the previous year’s report, which made it an increase of 84% in just one year.

Moreover, according to the Journal of Gambling Studies, gamblers who are college students make up 1.6% of the total population. It may seem little at first but the fact that the percentage is gradually increasing is enough to cause alarm.

So, the best way to cure treat gambling addiction is to lessen the chances of playing. This is because the more people can play the greater chances they get addicted.

How Can I treat Gambling Addiction?

1) Group Therapy:
Gamblers Anonymous offers a 12 step self help program similar to the one offered to alcohol addicts in Alcoholics Anonymous. Group therapy also offers gambling addicts advice and support from professional counselors and other gambling addicts in different phases of their recovery process. Gambler Anonymous centers are available in more than 1,200 locations statewide.

2) Individual Therapy:
Cognitive or behavior therapy can help gambling addicts to identify their unaware thinking and acting patterns, which led them to gamble compulsively, and to replace them with controllable and healthier ways of thinking.

3) Psychiatric Medication:
It has recently been proven that antidepressant medications from the family of SSRIs, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors can be affective in treatment of gambling addicts.
