The opioid epidemic has been one of the most troubling and deadly situations the U.S. has faced in history. The prevalent use of opioid prescription drugs became problematic in the 1990s.

Pharmaceutical companies were pushing these drugs and marketing them as safe, effective pain relievers. They weren’t letting doctors or the public know how potentially addictive they were.

It wasn’t until the 2000s that the addictive nature of opioids became common knowledge, and at that point, millions were already abusing and addicted to these drugs.
